The history of the Bulldogs is very interesting, depending upon their actual beginning. Most of the breeders believe that the modern Bulldog is descended from the Bull and Mastiff type dogs. Both of these breeds are crossed to get a herding and a protecting dog. Their muscular physique, stout faces, and broad bodies are ideal for this purpose. But in the 19th century, the bull-baiting for the English Bulldogs is banned by the government. Today, the Bulldogs are bred for domestic purposes, such as a guard dog, and more commonly for Fido.



They have a long and storied past, which makes them a unique dog breed as compared to the other dog breeds. But many people don’t know much about the different variations of the Bulldogs. Let’s see some of the famous Bulldog named breeds.

American Bulldog

American Bulldogs are known for their aggressive appearance. They are relatively new to the scene in the Bulldogs. They have a muscular body with a mild to stable temperament. If you are looking for a medium-size, curious, alert, and fearless dog, this is going to be the best breed for you.

French Bulldog

It’s another bulldog breed on the list with a small size. But don’t go on their small size, as they are muscular and intelligent. Most people love them due to their miniature size, bat-like appearance, and intelligence. These look like a more modern variation of the Bulldogs; however, their ancestry is greatly debated. Today, there are a lot of variations of the Bulldogs are there, including the Fawn French Bulldog, Tiger French Bulldog, Lilac Bulldog, and Merle French Bulldog.

Alpha Blue Blood Bulldog

It’s one of the most interesting breeds of the Bulldogs. No one exactly knows much about this special breed of the Bulldogs. Every breeder has their own stories about the Alpha Blue Blood Bulldog, which are widely varied. But from their images, we can conclude that once these dogs are apprised as guard dogs. They have muscular bodies with athletic abilities, which makes them good guard dogs and hunting dogs. Their charming nature and cool head make them good for the families.

Aussie Bulldog

Australian Bulldogs have wide-set eyes, wide and deep muzzle, and muscular appearance, which makes them perfect for the harsh and hot temperature of Australia. Their unending stamina with the muscular body is much like their counterpart in States. They are only 15 generations old and mixed to hold the temperament of the American Bulldogs.

Catahoula Bulldog

It’s a mixed breed of the American Bulldog and Catahoula Leopard dog. These are considered as the breed of robocop type invention, which has a history of over 100 years. They had a laid-back temperament with intelligence, speed, endurance, and natural hunting skills. They are specially developed to help cattle ranchers.

Old English Bulldog

Don’t think about their names when it’s come to the Old English Bulldogs as it’s not an old breed. The main purpose of their breeding was to create a dog, which is more athletic and larger than the modern English Bulldog.

Victorian Bulldog

It’s another created breed of the Bulldogs, which was bred from the 1970s to 1980s. They are associated with the man, who studies the paintings, statues, and photographs to determine, which exact breed he wanted to get. At the end, he gets a fit and healthy dog, which was slightly bigger than the usual Bulldogs at that time.

Campeiro Bulldog

It’s one of the few remaining natural descendants of the English Bulldog. Initially, the Campeiro dogs were brought to Brazil in the 16th century. They are very strong, brave, overwhelming, and obedient to their owners. They are more reserved with strangers, unlike the other dog breeds. Campeiro Bulldogs are good guard dogs for families and herds.

Dorset Olde Tyme Bulldog

Steve Barnett is known for developing a bulldog breed in the 1980s. He wanted to develop a breed that emphasized national spirit and pride. They become very loyal and strong dogs after the successful breeding of different generations. Their long and sleek appearance allows them agility and endurance.

Olde Boston Bulldog

These are developed in 1800s by crossing the English Bulldog and a Bull terrier. The crossing produced the two types of the Olde Boston Bulldogs, including the stout and broad-faced style and a long and slender style. They are normally loyal and friendly but still have the ability to fight.
